SPKA
Scottish Power Kite Association
(Promoting power kite flying in Scotland since 2000)

Today, the 12th April 2010, the SPKA celebrates 10 years since its inception!

It has come a long way in the 10 years from its start as the Scottish Para Kart Association. Its name changed in September 2002 to its current title of Scottish Power Kite Association, so that it encompasses all of the various disciplines of power kite flying rather than just parakarts in a race environment. Having said that it seems that even to the current time the most active discipline that seems to exist under its umbrella is indeed racing in kite buggies. It’s not really surprising when you realise that the longer-term members, who are all actively involved in the association are all ardent fans and participants in the buggy-racing scene in Scotland and beyond.

Under the auspices of buggy racing the association has for a number of years now, been affiliated to ‘F.I.S.L.Y.’ the International Land and Sandyachting Federation and as such, our top racing members compete annually as the Scottish team in the European and World class 8 championships.

The association is still actively trying to give a far wider scope of disciplines a platform from which to grow and improve but to be able to do so successfully, we need the freestyle element of the sport to become more actively involved within the running of the association its self. To help, by their lead, to allow the association in turn to give the support and facilities at its disposal to the wider community of power kite flyers who make up its membership.

Also, since taking over the reigns of the St. Andrews Kite Festival, we still hold an annual display of kite activities ably assisted by the Kite Club of Scotland with their large display kites. Another of our annual meetings, for all power kiters, the Summer Fly is aimed at being a completely social occasion on the beach with the provision of BBQ facilities and the opportunity to just fly for fun and mix with each other.

It is to this event, the Summer Fly, this year on Sunday the 27th June 2010 that we invite ALL members and powerkiters past, present and future, to come and help us celebrate our 10th anniversary at the West Sands St. Andrews, we look forward to meeting you all there!

Best Newcomer

Best Newcomer 2009-2010 :: Iain King!

SPKA Annual Buggy Racing Series was decided upon during the last event, with 3 races counting and unbeleivably close points totals proving that "it ain't over 'til its over". And with the SPKA's new 16" wheel class and 'Best Newcomer' prizes up for grabs there was the chance for prizes throughout the fleet.

So! What many have been waiting for is the final top 10 results which are as follows:

1st: Kev Arlott
2nd: Stephen Pirie
3rd: Robert Mitchell
4th: Alan Payne
5th: Tom Arlott
6th: Anne Downs
7th: James Armour
8th: Keith Haynes
9th: Iain King
10th: Mike Walters

Of which the top 5 have qualified to this years European Championships in De Panne, Belgium, alongside the top woman: Anne Downs.

All top 10 pilots may now run their placing as their SCO racing number until the next season ends (eg: SCO 1, SCO 2... SCO 10).

Meanwhile congratulations to Iain King! Who has taken the 'Best Newcomer' prize ( free entry to the 2010-2011 series) as well as 1st place in the 16" wheel class!

Prize giving will be held at the SPKAs 10 Year Anniversary Summer Fly 2010 held on the 27th of June at the West Sands, St. Andrews.
